MO-TRAYL Workshop Youth & Waithood across Contexts

On 26 January 2018, the MO-TRAYL team and affiliated researchers at FaSoS engaged in a workshop with Professor Alcinda Honwana. The discussion centered around mobility and waithood, and waithood across contexts.

Waithood is a liminal space in which young people are neither dependent children nor fully autonomous adults. In The Time of Youth (Honwana, 2012), it is described as a global phenomenon that affects young people in the both the Global South and North. Yet, young people who move between these two contexts are not discussed. Since MO-TRAYL focuses on mobile youth, we were interested in exploring together in the workshop how waithood manifests in different contexts, what its ‘universal markers’ are (if any), and what the opportunities and challenges of being mobile in a time of waithood are.
