Valentina Mazzucato invited to Malta to address the Root Causes of Migration
On 3 May 2017, professor Valentina Mazzucato attended a conference on research and innovation as tools to strengthen cooperation within the Euro-Mediterranean region, organised in Balzan, Malta. During a technical meeting, she discussed the root causes of migration. The results of this meeting were used the following day, when 42 Research Ministers of EU Member States and non-EU Mediterranean countries attended the conference.
The event was organised by the Malta Council for Science and Technology within the Ministry for Education and Employment, with the support of the European Commission.
The aim of the two-day conference was to provide a platform for discussion at technical and political levels on research and innovation within the Euro-Mediterranean region. The conclusion of the event involved the endorsement and adoption of a Declaration which takes stock of progress made in Euro-Mediterranean cooperation, providing an assessment thereof, while also looking ahead towards the implementation of the major large-scale initiatives that are being rolled out in the region, including PRIMA and BLUEMED. The Declaration also sows the seeds for potential future priorities in Euro-Med research and innovation cooperation during the final part of Horizon 2020 and beyond.
